Fire has developed into a major concern in every household specifically in the kitchen room where random fire often happens. This is amongst the reasons why people want to mount fire alarms inside their dwellings. They feel safer because of the fire alarms. Before, alarms were only essential in commercial facilities but today they are now deemed important in dwellings.

You can find three 3 groups of fire alarm devices - the normal Hand-operated fire alarm application, the Automatic application and the mix of both Hand-operated and Automatic. These are 3 general groups but this article also discusses 12 specific types of automatic smoke / fire alarm detectors made for particular uses and places.

The Hand-operated fire alarm system permits a person to physically press the activation key of the alarm device once he/she notices a fire at home. This alarm is often found in hallways and has a manual lever, secured with glass. You will also see a warning to break the glass during emergencies.

Automatic:

The Automatic Fire Alarm application warns a home owner against temperature variations or occasionally the buildup of smoke. It often gives a beeping siren alerting the household members. Several high-tech automatic fire alarm systems are connected right to the nearby fire station, hence when the alarm is triggered it is automatically relayed to the fire dept and fire fighters will rush to the scene as soon as possible.

Combination:

The mix of both Hand-operated and Automatic Fire Sensors is often found in commercial buildings. As a result of the high expense of automatic fire sensors, some businesses opt to combine the two applications to cut the expense. This type of alarm application is common in large facilities and not in residential dwellings.

A lot of households nowadays are taking safety to a higher level. They now prioritize their dwellings and the property they have inside. One more security alarm application found in most home dwellings is the Automatic smoke sensor alarm.

Sensitivity:

The Automatic smoke-sensing alarm is an extremely sensitive gadget which can respond to smoke giving a quick warning to family members. However this application has a confined covered area and for this reason The N.F.P.A. ( National Fire Protection Association ) suggests the set-up of smoke alarms in every space of the dwelling including the downstairs room and as well in every room, most importantly the kitchen zone where random fire often happens. In addition they propose that all smoke-sensors be interconnected to fully protect the building.

This alarm application is thought to be user-friendly as you can easily turn off the system when not needed specifically during home gatherings where often we grill and fix many chicken recipes.

Cost:

Smoke alarms usually cost from as low as $15 to as much as $80 in the stores depending on the amount of system responsiveness the buyer needs. One form of smoke alarm device which is good for the kitchen section is the photo-electric smoke detector. This type of alarm device is less reactive to smoke caused by cooking or air dampness and is only sensitive to visible smoke produced by gradual fires.

CO2:

One other smoke-sensing alarm that a home might use is the CO2 alarm. This alarm sensor is used in sleeping quarters or any resting place and is set off once the smoke is detected by its sensor. Though the smoke alarm is one well-known device employed by householders, some families employ heat alarm devices. This device actually detects fire via air temperature. It is often found in roof enclosures or garages.

Shield your residence and your household from danger produced by unexpected fire; pick a fire device or smoke-sensor that satisfies your demands. Fire alarm devices and smoke sensing detectors can really help make your dwelling secure and risk-free for you and your household.

After obtaining a fire detector or smoke-sensing device to protect your dwelling, you can now prepare any recipe in your kitchen.

Automatic Fire Detectors - AFDs

These automatic fire detectors (AFDs) are installed in places where there is a high risk of fire from combustible items like fabrics, wood, textiles and paper. Such places include hallways, corridors and certain rooms.

1 - Ionization detectors

Ionization detectors are used in places where there is a high possibility of fire outbreak from substances and liquids such as petrol, ethylated spirit, paint, gasoline and laboratory chemicals like Sulphuric Acid. They are highly sensitive and responsive to fires caused by these products. They can be installed in laboratories, chemical shops, paint shops, garage, chemical stores and cupboards.

2 - Heat detectors (fixed temperature)

This is a heat detector that detects a fixed temperature in a room. Heat detectors can be used in place of smoke detectors in areas such as the kitchen where non-hazardous smoke and steam from cooking is produced. Smoke detectors are therefore not used in kitchens because they will give a false alarm all the time. They can also be placed in places where dust might give a false fire alarm.

3 - Heat detectors (rate of rise)

This heat detector is another variation that detects sharp changes in temperature in a room. A temperature increase or decrease is detected and the development of fire can be noticed instantly before maximum damage is done. These detectors are often used in garages where smoke detectors are not suitable because of auto exhaust fumes that may cause a false alarm.

4 - Multi-sensors

Multi-sensors are a combination of heat and smoke detecting elements. They are useful because they can detect the risk of fire in two forms whereas most fire detectors will only detect one element – heat or smoke. A home owner can set a multi-sensor alarm to detect smoke in one period of the day and heat in another period of the day. The other option is to use the default settings in which the alarm can detect a combination of both heat and smoke.

5 - Co2 detectors

CO2 detectors also known as Carbon-monoxide alarms work by detecting the carbon-monoxide molecules emitted by the fire. Carbon-monoxide is released when a fire is smoldering or giving red embers. If a heat detector or smoke detector is not suitable for a particular room, a CO2 detector can be used. There are two types of CO2 detectors – domestic CO2 detectors and non-domestic CO2 detectors. You should not substitute or use a CO2 detector in place of a smoke detector because CO2 detectors do not detect the risk of a fire, but they detect a fire when it is already at the smoldering stage.

6 - Flame detectors

Flame detectors are installed in places where there is a high risk of instant fires. They can quickly detect spontaneous flames and flashes of heat. They are ideal for places like fuel storage rooms, gas filling stations, auto-mechanic shops, explosives industries, food processing factories, plastic processing factories and so on.

7 - Beam detectors

Beam detectors are special kinds of fire detectors that are used in buildings with high floor-to-ceiling heights. Such buildings include factories, warehouses, terminals, shopping complexes and docks. These detectors have send beams that cover a wide total area of the building floor and ceiling. These beams have a coverage range from 10 meters to 100 meters. Any smoke that forms at higher levels and in the building will be detected. Instead of buying multiple single-point smoke detectors to cover a large area, you can save money by buying a single beam detector that will cover the whole area.

8 - Air aspirating detectors

Air aspirating detectors are advanced smoke detectors that are more sensitive and effective than optical smoke detectors. An air aspirating detector can detect a small volume of smoke that cannot be detected by an optical smoke detector. These detectors are used in commercial buildings and places like museums, server rooms and galleries.

9 - Linear heat detectors

Linear heat detectors are fascinating because they look different from a typical fire or smoke detector.Linear heat detectors are simply wires that cover the surface area of an object or structure to be protected. The alarm trigger mechanism is simple, when the surrounding temperature exceeds a certain value, the electrical resistance in the wires will change and a short circuit will take place, which in turn triggers the alarm.

10 - CCTV video fire detection

Video Fire Detection uses CCTV technology (Closed Circuit Television) to detect the presence of fire. A CCTV camera will take pictures and the images are sent to the computer to be analyzed for particular patterns. When the computer detects patterns that are associated with smoke and heat, an alarm will be triggered. This fire detection method is used in airports, tunnels, fuel depots and aircraft hangars.

11 - Hand Operated Fire Alarm

These are often found in schools, colleges, dormitories, corridors, community halls and homes. They are manually operated meaning that if someone sees a fire or smoke in the building they must rush to the place where the alarm is situated and pull or press the trigger.
